Life has been a bit of a rollercoaster recently, the kind of rollercoaster that includes a lot of toddlers with colds marking university assignments, and life admin popping up at inconvenient times. I’ve been feeling uninspired, but I also have wanted to write things that require more time and headspace than I’ve been able to give. So, you may have notice that my posting schedule has slipped from fortnightly to every three weeks recently (or maybe you haven’t, that’s okay - I know you’re busy too).
BUT thankfully I haven’t been too busy to eat, and I’ve enjoyed some truly delicious meals with friends and my family recently. So, I thought, in lieu of anything profound, detailed or well researched, I’d offer you five delicious things I’ve eaten in Sydney recently that have got me through the end of autumn and beginning of winter.
Sydney Rock Oysters
You’re either a lover or a hater. I get it, they aren’t for everyone, but they are for me. I love oysters, and on the south coast of NSW, Sydney Rock Oysters are (allegedly) at their best in Winter. I like them with the mignonette sauce (eschallots and red wine vinegar) and I like them outside on a cold, clear day.
A Roasted Buckwheat Pain Au Chocolat from AP bread
AP bread has outposts across inner Sydney from the Paramount House Hotel to Carriageworks Markets, so one of these pastries shouldn’t be hard to find. Their Pain au Chocolat has a really satisfying nutty, earthiness to it thanks to the buckwheat which almost makes up for the fact that croissants costing $9 is almost normal these days.
Baramasalata from Chiswick Woollahra
My husband took me to Chiswick for our five year anniversary and one of his picks from the menu was their Baramasalata. I was skeptical because I’ve never seen a Taramasalata that I’ve wanted to eat (there’s just something about the pink colour and fish dip in with the hummus that freaks me out). But this was genuinely delightful. It was smoky and fresh while still having that distinctive fish-and-chips-on-the-beach Barramundi flavour.
A Fresh Fig
Bear with me on this one. First of all, not everything good has to be expensive or from a specific brand or shop. Sometimes, simple the food is the best. We are lucky enough to have a fig tree in our garden and every time we have a few sunny days another fig ripens and they have been so delicate and rich. I’ve seen figs around at markets and fruit shops too, so I’m guessing its the season, it certainly is for our little tree.
Myra’s Kitchen
Myra’s opened on King Street in Newtown but quickly moved around the corner to a bigger premises on O’Connell Street (next door to Brewtown, if you’re familiar). They do Cypriot food that is fresh and simple and delicious as well as great coffee and even better Kalo Prama (Cypriot Lemon Cake).
Here’s hoping that in the busy-ness, there is still time to eat well ❤.
yes to fig my fav, but taramasalata is also my fav bahahahahaha
Very good post ! I loved the fresh fig too. Need to go back to AP Bread at some point!
